Religion - The Excuse For Conflict and War

Religion on Planet Earth: Unity in Belief, Division in Practice.

Religion is a central part of life for most humans, with over 85% of the population believing in a higher power. There are more than 4,300 religions worldwide, with major faiths like Christianity (31%), Islam (25%), and Hinduism (15%) dominating the landscape. Despite shared themes like morality and devotion to a Creator, humanity struggles to find common ground.

In the name of religion, terrible crimes have been committed - wars, genocides, and persecution. The Crusades, the Inquisition, and modern acts of terrorism demonstrate how faith can be twisted to justify violence. Ironically, while religions often teach love and compassion, history is stained with atrocities carried out in their names.

Events like the Crusades also had extra and sometimes even unintended benefits, such as spreading knowledge, culture, and innovation across civilizations. By contrast, many of today's religiously justified terrorist acts stem from anger, jealousy, or extremism rather than any broader cultural or societal advancement.

For extraterrestrial visitors, Earth's religious diversity might seem both inspiring and tragic: a species united in seeking meaning yet divided by the very beliefs meant to guide them.
